What is Quad-Mode™?
Quad-Mode charge pumps employ an innovative, patented architecture that adds a fourth mode of operation with no more capacitors than required for a conventional three-mode charge pump. Prior to Catalyst's Quad-Mode architecture, each additional mode of operation came at the cost of an additional capacitor and an increase in board space associated with the placement of that capacitor. This extra capacitor also necessitates two additional pins on the package. The Quad-Mode architecture eliminates the third capacitor and the associated two pins, to enable dramatically smaller packaging.
Quad-Mode LED drivers offer the simplicity of charge pump designs and the efficiency of inductor-based solutions, without adding cost, capacitors, pins or board space.

Why Quad-Mode™?
Charge pumps are often used to boost the supply voltage when driving LEDs in battery-powered applications. In the past, most LED drivers offered up to three modes of operation corresponding to boost ratios of 1x, 1.5x and 2x. By adding a fourth mode of operation to boost the supply voltage by 1.33x, Catalyst's Quad-Mode charge pumps deliver a gain of 10% efficiency over much of the operating voltage range of a lithium-ion battery.
Catalyst's 1.33x fractional operating mode also reduces the input switching currents seen at the battery, minimizing the overall supply noise - a critical parameter in portable devices such as cell phones.
Efficiency levels achieved using the 1x, 1.33x, 1.5x and 2x boosting sequence of Catalyst's Quad-Mode LED drivers rival those of traditional inductive-based boost converters while still providing all the advantages of lower cost and size associated with charge pump solutions.
